Social Media Essentials: Auditing Your Facebook Page

A person works on a laptop outside at a table. They have a coffee cup in their left hand and their cell phone is sitting to their right.

Social media is a necessary tool for any business that wants to be found by its customers online. But with the constant changes and evolutions of all the platforms, it can be difficult to know how well your pages are performing and if you are keeping up with all the current trends. Essentially: social media and Facebook specifically is not a “Set it and forget it” moment. As a business owner, you need to ensure that your page is continually updated and performing well.

Below we outline some simple things you can do today to audit your Facebook Page to ensure you are keeping up with the current trends.

Conduct a Google Search

What happens when you google your company name? The goal is to get your website at the top of the list, but next should be your social media accounts. What does your Facebook page look like in the search? Is it easy to find? If you have a hard time finding your business and knowing in just a few sentences what your company is all about, then your customers or potential customers are bound to have the same trouble.

Keep Your Company Information Current

When you initially set-up your Facebook account, you may not have put a lot of thoughts into the “About Us” and “Services” descriptions. Chances are, you probably put in the bare minimum to get your page up and running. In your audit you will want to review this information to ensure it is up-to-date and accurate. You will also want to add your Facebook Page to any checklist for updating when you change a company phone number, website, hours of operation or other crucial information.

Custom Facebook URL

Facebook assigns a standard URL for each page created BUT you can select a unique username for your Facebook URL. You can only change it once, though, so be smart about it. You can find instructions for how to do this HERE.

Update Your Profile and Cover Photos

A rule of thumb is to keep your Facebook business page profile picture as your logo. You will want to ensure your logo completely fits in the circular area of the profile photo, if not you will want to re-seize it.

When people see your page for the first time, your cover photo is a valuable piece of real estate to showcase your brand and engage with your visitors. Your cover photo should give a visitor to your page a sense of who you are as a business. From time to time you may even want to promote a current special offer you have. Cover photos should be changed out at least every 6 months.

Manage Your Reviews

You will want to check to see if you have reviews. If you don’t have many or any at all, you will want to develop a system for requesting reviews. If you notice any negative review, you will want to respond to them in a timeline manner. Businesses that respond well to negative feedback instead of ignoring it enjoy better success and appear more trustworthy.
